Established in 1904 as the Petone Technical School, the Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) has evolved over more than a century into one of New Zealand's most esteemed Institutions for Vocational and Applied Education. In 2001, WelTec was formed through the amalgamation of the Central Institute of Technology and Hutt Valley Polytechnic, consolidating its position as a leading Polytechnic in the Wellington region. A significant milestone in WelTec's journey occurred on 1 September 2022, when it became part of Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology, uniting with Whitireia to form a business division under this national network. This integration aims to create a cohesive vocational education system across New Zealand, enhancing the delivery of skills and training to meet the evolving needs of industries and communities. WelTec operates multiple campuses, with its main campus located in Petone, Lower Hutt, just a 15-minute drive from Wellington city. The Petone campus is situated in a vibrant suburb. Additional campuses include facilities in Wellington CBD and Auckland, providing students with access to diverse learning environments to study in New Zealand.
