The University of Tampa didn’t begin as a university. Rather, it was the famous Tampa Bay Hotel that once hosted elite guests, European royals, political figures, and military leaders. This luxurious, Moorish-style resort, which evokes a Turkish-and-Arabian-night fantasy, was built by railroad and steamship magnate Henry B. Plant between 1888 and 1891. Spending over $3 Million of his own money, Henry B. Plant transformed Tampa from being a small fishing village into a major international and economic hub. Following the Great Depression, the hotel was leased to the City of Tampa, which then leased it to Tampa Junior College in 1933. While the architecture's function changed, what remained was the iconic historic landmark that continues to inspire awe. Soon, the name changed to the University of Tampa, marking the beginning of a transformative legacy in higher education in Tampa, Florida. The University of Tampa, USA, has earned its reputation as a highly regarded, premium private institution. Currently, the university holds several accreditations, including the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) .
