About University of Roehampton, London, England
The University of Roehampton was originally founded in 1841 as a teacher training college for women by the Church of England’s National Society. In 1975, it was restructured as the Roehampton Institute of Higher Education. After a four-and-a-half-year federation with the University of Surrey, Roehampton was granted independent university status by the Privy Council in June 2004. The University of Roehampton operates from a single main campus located in southwest London, positioned between the neighborhoods of Putney, Wimbledon, Richmond, and Barnes. It is organized into four historic colleges: Digby Stuart, Froebel, Southlands, and Whitelands — all of which were established in the 19th century. These colleges originally functioned as independent teacher training institutions before merging over time to form what is now Roehampton. Each student is allocated to one of the four colleges when they enroll at the University. Roehampton has a diverse and inclusive student community, with around 9,000 students studying on campus. International students make up approximately 14% of the total population, representing more than 149 countries. They are enrolled across all 19 academic departments, pursuing a wide range of programs in areas such as Business, Media, English, Humanities, Life Sciences, and Drama. With six active research centers, the University’s work contributes to national policy and brings meaningful changes to communities worldwide. This solid foundation in research also enhances student experience. After graduation, students become part of a global alumni network of 85,000 and continue to enjoy the benefits of the University of Roehampton, including career guidance, access to alumni events, and discounted use of facilities.
