University of Otago, established in 1869 through an ordinance by the Otago Provincial Council, holds the title of New Zealand's oldest university. Ranked among the top 1% of universities in the world, it is known for its research-led approach and is highly regarded in the country for international student education. While its primary campus is in Dunedin, it also features Health Sciences Campuses in Christchurch and Wellington, an information and teaching center in central Auckland, and an information office in Wellington. On January 1, 2007, Dunedin College of Education merged with the university, adding Invercargill campus. It has a total student population of 18,960, including approximately 2,247 international students. With around 1,610 full-time equivalent (FTE) academic and research staff, it focuses on the areas of Business, Health Science, Humanities, and Science. The University of Otago in New Zealand is home to various research facilities and special collections, including the Anatomy Museum, Centre for Innovation, Marine Studies Centre, and more. Many of its programs are unique within the country. As one of the Top Universities in New Zealand, it hosts the country's only dental and surveying schools, along with the standalone botany program. Its law school is considered among the best in the nation, and it also boasts New Zealand’s oldest and largest medical school.
