Founded in 1887 as the Croatan Normal School, the University of North Carolina at Pembroke had established itself as an institute that aimed to prepare young Native American Public School teachers. For many years, it remained the only state-operated college of the USA devoted to Native American Studies. Nowadays, UNCP has earned the reputation of being one of the most important MSI owing to its inclusiveness, accessibility and close connection to the history of the Lumbee Tribe.
