Ohio University is the oldest public university in Ohio and is located in Athens. It was established following Ohio's statehood in 1803. On February 18, 1804, the Ohio General Assembly enacted legislation to create what is now known as ‘Ohio University’. The university welcomed its first students in 1808, marking the beginning of its long-standing academic tradition. In addition to its main residential campus, it operates several regional campuses, including those in Chillicothe, Eastern, Lancaster, Southern, and Zanesville. These campuses extend the university's academic reach, providing diverse learning opportunities across the state. Ohio University USA has a total student enrollment exceeding 28,000, with approximately 20,000 Undergraduate students. Academic instruction is provided by a faculty comprising 882 full-time and 304 part-time members. Recognized as an R1-classified research university in Ohio, it actively contributes to research through its 27 centers and institutes, securing approximately $73 million in funding. Its researchers have been awarded over 200 U.S. and international patents. Additionally, more than 600 students have presented their projects at Ohio University’s Research and Creative Activity Expo, showcasing innovation and academic excellence.
