About Northern College
Northern College was established in 1967, with the Timmins Campus serving as both a center of learning and community engagement. The College focuses on innovative and engaging teaching methods, ensuring students gain practical skills alongside academic knowledge. It operates four campuses across Northeastern Ontario: Timmins, Haileybury, Kirkland Lake, and Moosonee. Its post-secondary programs prepare learners for careers in Business and Office Administration, Community Services, Engineering Technology and Trades, Health Sciences and Emergency Services, Veterinary Sciences, and Welding Engineering Technology, equipping students with the skills required to succeed in their chosen professions. The Institutional Research Department at Northern College conducts research and prepares reports to support operations and guide strategic decision-making. Additionally, the Department of Applied Research, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation (AREI) manages the Innovation Hub, which focuses on developing innovative products, processes, and service prototypes. This hub provides students and faculty with opportunities to engage in applied research, fostering creativity, problem-solving, and entrepreneurial skills through education in Canada. Northern College collaborates with the Canadian Mining Innovation Council and local mining companies to prepare students for Ontario’s expanding lithium, gold, and cobalt sectors. This partnership provides Timmins students with priority access to high-paying co-ops, internships, and employment opportunities that are not available at other southern Ontario colleges.
Timmins is known as the ‘City with a Heart of Gold’ because of its mining history and is one of Ontario’s most affordable cities. It combines a safe, small-town atmosphere with urban amenities and is home to over 50 lakes and numerous nature trails suitable for hiking, skiing, and kayaking.
Timmins Transit operates city-wide routes, including South Porcupine and the Timmins Transit Terminal. Due to construction, buses temporarily stop near the East End Family Health Team’s west entrance. Modern transit features include on-demand microtransit services, smartphone-based payment, and improved coverage in low-density areas.
Winters in Timmins are long and snowy, with temperatures often dropping below –20°C. Students are advised to wear thermal layers, snow boots, and insulated jackets, use moisturizers and lip balm to prevent dryness, check the Timmins Snow Plow Tracker for cleared roads, and use block-heater plugs in vehicles to prevent battery freeze.
