Keyano College was initially established in 1965 as the Alberta Vocational Centre, and it was officially renamed to its current name in 1975. This name is drawn from the Cree word kiyânaw, meaning ‘we, us, our’. With a rich legacy of 60 years, Keyano College has long been a beacon of accessible, community-centred education in Northern Alberta. Positioned as a leading community College in Canada, Keyano serves the expansive Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, reaching from north-central Alberta to the borders of Saskatchewan and the Northwest Territories. It has evolved from humble beginnings with instruction in a set of ATCO trailers with just 76 full-time students by 1966, to becoming a comprehensive, multi-campus Institution with strong ties to both industry and community. Keyano College operates two primary campuses, one is the Clearwater Campus and the Suncor Energy Industrial Centre, both located in Fort McMurray. These facilities house teaching spaces, labs, trades shops, and specialized training environments attuned to regional educational and economic needs. Keyano emphasises small class sizes, nurturing close relationships between students and instructors and supporting an engaged, community-oriented learning environment.
