Founded in 1857, Illinois State University holds the distinction of being the first public university in the state. Situated in the Bloomington-Normal area, the institution began its journey as Illinois’ first teacher training college. In 1964, its name was changed to Illinois State University at Normal, and just three years later, in 1967, it was officially designated as Illinois State University. It operates from a single campus. Its first academic structure, Old Main, stood from 1861 until 1957. Although the building no longer exists, the bell from its clock has been preserved in the university’s quad, symbolically marking the site where Old Main once stood. Illinois State University has a total student enrolment of 21,546, including approximately 2,439 Graduate students and more than 19,107 Undergraduates from over 77 countries. The institution also attracts a significant population of international students, contributing to its diverse academic community.
