About College of the Rockies

College of the Rockies was founded as East Kootenay Community College (EKCC) on May 8, 1975. The Institution began with modest enrolments across five locations with 351 students in Cranbrook, and smaller cohorts in Kimberley, Fernie, Golden, and Invermere, under the leadership of its first principal, Dr. Gary Dickinson. In 1995, EKCC was officially renamed College of the Rockies, marking a new chapter in its identity and mission. Over the years, it has emerged as a leading college in Canada, especially valued for its small-college experience, responsiveness to regional workforce needs, and breadth of academic programming. As of the recent academic year, it served approximately 2,341 full-time equivalent (FTE) students across seven campuses and has approximately 9,600 full-time and part-time learners annually, including around 216 international students from over 40 countries. Its campus network includes a main campus in Cranbrook and regional campuses in Kimberley, Fernie, Creston, Invermere, and Golden, each contributing to accessible education for local and international learners. To study at the College of the Rockies, Canada, a comprehensive suite of departments and programs are available. The College also embeds applied research and work-integrated learning, reinforcing its mission to align education with real-world career readiness. The College is anchored by its mission to ‘transform lives and enrich communities through the power of education’ and its vision to ‘provide the best small college experience in Canada’. Core values like student success, respect, and innovation drive institutional priorities, focusing on student experience, employee experience, and community engagement.
