Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, students need a Standard Visitor visa (as a tourist). Once they have an unconditional offer of a place at a UK university, they would then need to return to their home country to apply for a study visa. This is because they cannot switch from a visitor visa to a study visa from within the UK.
CAS stands for "Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies". Students need a CAS number in order to apply for a student visa. Once they have an unconditional offer from Bangor University the university will email the 'CAS letter' to the student. The CAS number can be found on the CAS letter.
If the student is progressing from undergraduate to Postgraduate or Postgraduate to PhD, they can apply to extend their visa in the UK. Students need to make a new visa application before their old visa expires. If the student wants to change their course part-way through, and the new course is the same level, same subject area, and the same length as the old course, then they can continue studying at Bangor University with their existing visa, depending on the decision made by the International Student Support Office. However, if the course is in a completely different subject area, they will need to return home to and make a new visa application.
No, University rules stipulate that all registered students who are sponsored on a student visa by Bangor University are expected to live within a reasonable traveling distance of Bangor and in the North Wales area.
Students applying for a student visa for postgraduate study in certain sensitive subjects will need to apply for an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate before they can study in the UK. The offer letter will state if they need an ATAS certificate.
