Anglia Ruskin University traces its origins to the founding of the Cambridge School of Art in 1858 by the distinguished philanthropist and social thinker John Ruskin. Over the decades, it underwent substantial development, ultimately becoming Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), which continues to be based at the heart of its contemporary campus in Cambridge. Several colleges and institutions are also a part of ARU, including the Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology (CCAT) and the Essex Institute of Higher Education. In 2024, Writtle University College merged with the university, expanding its academic scope and institutional reach. ARU Cambridge is one of four main campuses operated by Anglia Ruskin University, alongside Chelmsford, Peterborough, and Writtle.
